The ARKGroup and Foster Care in Texas

The ARKGroup celebrates 33 years of impacting the quality of parent-child and teacher-child relationships for more than 200 schools, 1,200 teachers, and 32,000 students. Now the ARKGroup is embracing a new initiative: working with the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services (DFPT) and their foster and pre-foster care programs in Texas.

The Need

The post-foster care situation for many children in Texas is tragic:

  • Half the homeless population spent time in foster care.
  • Eighteen percent of the state’s prisoners are foster kids.
  • Foster children are 5 times more likely to be drug dependent compared

to other kids.

Texas is not providing our foster kids with the needed social-emotional support to successfully navigate the outside world. Tragically, the training for Texas foster and pre-foster families does not include a course on parenting. Furthermore, the Texas Legislature has not provided the funds for parent training.

The ARKGroup Donates Its Award-Winning Parenting Courses

The ARKGroup is donating its research-based (University of Texas School of Public Health) parenting program, ARK for Parents and Caregivers, to the DFPT. We signed an MOU (Memorandum of Understanding) with the officials in Region 6 and are now the official provider of parent training for foster care and pre-foster care families in Houston, Harris County, and 11 surrounding counties.  Approximately 5,000 at-risk families will have access to our online courses.

In Region 3, Fort Worth and Dallas, regional heads have been waiting for a signed Region 6 Mou that they can use as a template in signing MOUs with them. ARK will concentrate on solidifying our ARK for Parents and Caregivers programming in Regions 3 and 5 before scaling it to the other ten regions in Texas.

While we have a tremendous fund-raising task ahead of us to support this venture ($309,000 over the next 18 months), the ARKGroup celebrates this opportunity to make life better for at-risk families and children.
